Magnificent Obession: The Art of Gaudi and De Saint Phalle
Saturday, October 24, 2009 In walking through the campus, who has not been struck by the colorful exuberance of the Sun God? Installed in 1983, this statue, created by Niki de Saint Phalle, was the first art work commissioned for UCSD, and has become a favorite with students and community alike. The annual Sun God Festival was inspired by it, and students have shown their originality by adding to the statue - sun glasses, a shroud, a cap and gown, and a nest of hay with eggs. Learn about the influence of famed Spanish artist, Antonio Gaudí, on the work of de Saint Phalle from local artist, Arline Paa. Mary Beebe, Director of the Stuart Collection, will also share her experience of working with de Saint Phalle. Tapas, drinks and dessert will be served. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the International Center Scholarship Program, which last year donated $57,000 to international and UCSD students.
