Take a closer look at the recent elections in Iran and Afghanistan at a special presentation by UC San Diego professors Clark Gibson, chair of the department of political science, and Babak Rahimi, ’97, assistant professor Iranian and Islamic Studies. Both professors were in the Middle East during the recent elections and witnessed the voting and subsequent protests.

Clark Gibson was an election observer in the recent Afghanistan presidential and provincial council. He witnessed the vote in Helmund Province, the region with the greatest concentration of poppy farmers in the world, and one of the most violent.

Babak Rahimi originally traveled to Iran in March to study the impact of the Internet on Iranian electoral politics. But, following the controversial election results in June, he became the event’s leading academic voice, regularly reporting for news outlets including CNN, Los Angeles Times and NPR.

Organized by the UCSD Alumni Association, UCSD Near You takes the University’s outstanding faculty out across the country to share their cutting-edge research and academic insights. The series features a wide range of topics that affect us all – from autism and the ethics of stem cell research to national security and global warming.
