UC San Diego Celebration of Abilities Awareness Events October 2010

Please join the UC San Diego Community for a Celebration of Abilities during October, in observance of Disability Awareness Month. October is National Disability Awareness Month in the United States. Every year, Celebration of Abilities Month events provide information related to health issues, personal well-being, and disability prevention and management.

All events are wheelchair accessible. Call (858) 534-6744 for general information. To request American Sign Language interpretation or other reasonable accommodations necessary to enable your participation, call at least one week in advance of an event. Musicians Mark Goffeney, a popular, true diversity champion speaker, and headlining guitarist/vocalist favorite along with Magdalen Hsu-Li, an engaging vocalist who seamlessly weaves music and story with a progressive diversity message into an amazing performance will perform for your listening enjoyment. Shawn Pelofsky, a cutting edge, talented comedienne headliner from the World Famous - Hollywood and La Jolla Comedy Store and actress from both television and of film will emcee the events on both days.

Special Guest Appearance by major TV and film star: Jerry Mathers of the TV Show: "Leave It to Beaver" will be making a presentation on October 6, at noon entitled: "Learning From Our Past: Entertainment Industry's Influences on Attitudes About People with Disabilities".

Mr. Mathers is a true diversity champion who is an influential advocate for people with disabilities. Jerry Mathers' appearance is made possible by the co-sponsorship by the UC San Diego 50th Anniversary Seed Grant.

There will be a question and answer discussion with entertainers with disabilities on both days.

Be there for live entertainment and comedy featured, light refreshments and a chance to win one of many great raffle prizes (must be present to win).

ART EXHIBIT:

"A Celebration of Abilities" Art Exhibit will be on display during the month of October in the Price Center Theater Foyer. Enjoy the art, and come meet the artists and learn about their techniques and talents on October 5th, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Artists' Reception in the Price Center Theater Foyer.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:

October 15 - In Your Shoes: A Social Justice Lens - Dialogue on
Activities, Access and the Environment.

Noon - 1:00 p.m.

Please join Chancellor Fox and UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff members with disabilities and without disabilities who have paired up and shadowed each other during a part of our typical work or school day. There will have a discussion about what they have learned from each other about our different experiences and how we have succeeded at the University. There is still time to volunteer to participate in these shadowing opportunities and then to participate in the panel discussion.
