April Workshops at the Biomedical Library

The Biomedical Library invites you to attend some of our hands-on workshops in April. All workshops are free and open to UCSD Faculty, Students, and Staff. Workshops will be held in the Biomedical Library’s computer training room.

Microsoft Visio: Creating Killer Diagrams
Fri, Apr 8, 9:00 – 11:00 am

This is a hands-on workshop during which you will learn the fundamentals of diagram creation and actually create several different types of diagrams. It comes with a detailed workbook to help you apply what you learn to your own applications.

Essential PubMed
Wed, Apr 13, 1:00 – 2:30 pm

This hands-on workshop focuses on what every user needs to know about PubMed, whether doing a search for a specific author or topic using keywords. Learn to focus your results with limits, become familiar with the features of the advanced search screen, and know how to use UC E-Links to easily get to full text articles.

Managing Citations: Which Tool is Right for You?

This session will provide an introduction to a variety of tools for managing papers and citations including EndNote, RefWorks, Zotero, Mendeley and discuss how to choose the tool that's right for you. (Note: We will not be covering Mac-only products.)

Microsoft Visio: Making Diagrams Come Alive with Data

This workshop will show you how to import data and display it in many different formats, using lines, colors, icons and measurement tools to help the recipients of your diagram quickly and easily get the global and detailed picture of what your diagram is communicating.

Extreme Googling

Come learn the secrets of extreme Googling, focusing on the search tools within Google. Find out how to exploit Google and Google Scholar to the max. See how Google Scholar and UC-eLinks make getting to the full-text easy.

EndNote
Thu, Apr 21, 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Writing a research paper and need to manage your references? Using EndNote already, but want to learn about its "power" features (e.g., Connect, "Cite While You Write," etc.)? Take this workshop to learn to build your own EndNote reference library and work with Word to write your paper and seamlessly create bibliographies.

Excel – Basic 101
Fri, Apr 28, 9:00 – 11:00 am

Getting the Most from Excel - Provides firm grounding in Excel basics; covers the Excel environment, formulas, views, printing, and spreadsheet organization. Helps you calculate spreadsheets quickly and easily, specify complex print routines, and efficiently manipulate spreadsheets and their contents.

The Biomedical Library has information specialists who can provide in-depth consultations and customized instruction on a wide variety of topics such as:

· Searching PubMed, BIOSIS Previews, PsycINFO, and other databases

· Locating electronic journals and full-text

· Using bibliographic file management software (e.g., EndNote and RefWorks) to manage your references and “cite as you write”
