CRCA Exchange #8 - The Art of Data Spatialization
Featuring CRCA/Calit2 researchers Todd Margolis, Joachim Gossmann, and Rick Snow

Atlas in Silico
Todd Margolis (CRCA Technical Director) will co-present the virtual reality installation ATLAS in Silico. Margolis will describe how the project fuses art and emerging technologies with pioneering science. The immersive and interactive installation is the product of years of research collaborations spanning the visual arts, music, computer science and metagenomics and has been shown to over 100,000 people in galleries, museums and festivals around the world.

Joachim Gossmann
(PhD Candidate UCSD Computer Music) will give an overview of his current work that combines topics such as strategies for virtual auditory landscapes, realtime acoustic architectural modelling, qualitative data display, seismology, heart rate sonification, auditory self-similarity, active temporal perception in time-based environments, multichannel concert loudspeaker installations, audio-haptics, cross-modal accountability and audio-augmented reality.

Rick Snow
(Ph.D. Candidate UCSD Music Composition) will discuss his work as a composer working with audio spatialization including techniques and concerns related to his fixed media work “Labyrinth" and his live performance work "Old Windows, New Worlds". Snow will also preview the final concert on the Music Under the Influence of Computers series and discuss the techniques and concerns of a few of the featured artists.
