In March, UC San Diego celebrated the launch of its new Center on Global Justice with the "New Frontiers in Global Justice” conference, welcoming Nobel Laureate and Harvard Economist Amartya Sen to open the event with an inspiring talk, presented by the Helen Edison Lecture Series.

As one of the world’s leading social thinkers, Sen is best known for his work on the causes of famine and has devoted his long and distinguished career to an astonishing range of subjects in economics and philosophy - including social choice theory, welfare economics, developmental economics, public health, gender studies, moral and political philosophy, and the economics of peace and war. His capabilities approach to the measurement of human well-being has greatly influenced the development goals of the United Nations.
