OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR -
PERSONNEL
August 30, 1993
ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: The UCSD 1993 Staff Employee of the Year Award Program
The purpose of this program is to recognize and celebrate the
outstanding achievements and meritorious service of our staff
employees. Ten awards will be given: one award of $1,000 for the
"Outstanding Staff Employee" and nine awards of $500 for
"Exemplary Service." All ten awardees will receive a
complimentary UCSD Recreation Card, and will have their names
inscribed on the perpetual plaque which is prominently displayed
in the Personnel Department at Torrey Pines Center.
All UCSD employees including faculty, other academic personnel,
management, and any staff employee who has passed probation are
invited to submit nominations. A panel of nine, appointed by the
Chancellor, Dean, Vice Chancellors, and Director will review all
nominations and recommend awardees to the Chancellor. Awards
will be made by Chancellor Atkinson in November at a special
ceremony.
This program allows employees to be singled out for special
recognition for their outstanding service and contributions which
are often unknown to many. Its success depends on you and your
willingness to take the necessary time to initiate and/or endorse
the nomination of a staff employee whom you believe to be truly
deserving of one of these awards. A nomination form is attached
for your convenience.
Nominations will be received in only two locations, the Personnel
Department at Torrey Pines Center South and the Medical Center
Human Resource Department. Nominations must be received in one
of these departments no later than September 30, 1993 in order
for them to be considered. If there is a possibility that this
deadline could be missed by sending the nomination form through
the mail, nominators should hand-deliver nominations to one of
these locations to avoid the nomination being ruled ineligible.
(Nominations received electronically will not be considered.)
The following guidelines will assist you in preparing a
nomination:
1. Any staff employee who has passed probation may be nominated
for an award. Members of the Executive Program and members
of the Management and Professional (MAP) Program are not
eligible.
2. For each employee nominated there must be a Principal
Nominator and at least two endorsements. Each person may
serve as Principal Nominator for only one employee, although
he/she may endorse any number of nominations made by other
Principal Nominators. If an employee submits more than one
nomination for which he/she serves as Principal Nominator,
all of those nominations will be invalidated. Only one
nominee's name is permitted on each nomination form. All
nomination forms must be signed by the Principal Nominator
and Endorsers in order to be considered.
3. Each nomination must contain the specific reasons, with
examples when possible, for making the nomination.
Nominations should describe specific ways in which the
person nominated has excelled, e.g., by providing
exceptional service to students, patients, or clients; by
creating and maintaining high morale; by making notable
contributions to a unit or a department, and so forth.
Satisfactory performance of all assigned job duties is
insufficient to be considered for these awards. Nominations
without a statement of reasons for nomination will not be
considered.
4. Nominators are requested to use the nomination forms
attached to this Notice and to refrain from sending in
books, art work, photographs and other objects with their
nominations.
5. The identity of those who nominate and endorse nominations
will not be revealed to those nominated or selected for the
awards.
6. Nominations will not be returned and, except for the ten
employees selected, individuals will not be informed of
their nomination. (Nominators may, therefore, wish to tell
those they nominate, and/or give them copies of the
nomination form, but there is no requirement to do so.)
Please note that the final date for submitting nominations is
September 30, 1993. A general announcement of the names of those
selected for the awards will be made in mid-October.
