OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR December 7, 1994 ACADEMIC SENATE AND INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF (e-mail) KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF (e-mail) SUBJECT: Establishment of Program in Human Development I am pleased to announce the establishment of an undergraduate major and minor degree program in Human Development at UC San Diego. Courses offered under the new program will begin fall 1995 and will lead to an interdisciplinary degree in human development offered in cooperation with Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Communication, Linguistics, Literature, Psychology and Sociology. The study of human development has become central to public policy on and education of infants, children, and adolescents especially with the change in the structure of the American family. The new program will bring together research and educational resources available in Human Development and will improve access to information for students and the research community. The program will emphasize two major areas: first, child development will focus on neurological and perceptual development, exploring sensory and biological bases and, the dynamics of development and change in cognitive and social functioning. Cognitive, linguistic and affective development will also be part of child development and will include intellectual and emotional development and linguistic and cognitive processes. Second, the program will focus on the world of the child, the social world of family, school, and community life, and childhood and its cross-cultural theories of child development, the history of childhood, and public policy for children. Joan Stiles, professor of psychology will direct the program. Information is available by calling the Program in Human Development at (619) 534-3119 or by Fax at (619) 534-2807. Richard C.
