Printing Plant & Pre-Press Closure
A decision has been made to close the printing plant and pre-press services
in Graphics & Reproduction Services effective August 31, 1995. At this time, the primary reason for this decision is the seriously disappointing financial performance of the printing plant operations. Unfortunately, there are no promising signs of improvement and continuing operations would
only result in making matters worse.
As painful as it is, by making the decision now to close the plant at the end of next month, we can still provide reasonable notification to the campus; and we can begin to focus on reducing the individual hardships of the employees whose jobs are affected by this decision. Thirty-two career employees and twenty-six temporary employees will be laid off due to the plant closure.
From today through August 19, 1995, orders will only be accepted on a case-by-case basis for work requiring printing plant or pre-press services.
Beginning August 20, 1995, we will be unable to accept any further requests
for work. Departments are encouraged to contact campus purchasing to find alternative sources for their departmental printing needs.
UC San Diego will continue to operate its Copier Service programs; including the campus quick copy centers located at the Campus Services Complex, Basic Science Building and Muir Campus.
Questions concerning your departmental printing services can be directed to
Ed Dunn, x44610.
