SUBJECT: Establishment of the Center for Advanced Computational Science and Engineering
Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative officials, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for Advanced Computational Science and Engineering as a campus research unit and the appointment of Professor Sidney Karin as its first director.
The Center will support interdisciplinary interactions among UCSD faculty and students aimed at fostering, promoting, and developing computational science and engineering research and education, as well as providing advanced computational infrastructure. It is envisaged that ultimately the Center will become the headquarters of a multicampus research unit, providing advanced computational infrastructure for all nine campuses of the University of California. The Center's principal task over the next two months is the preparation of the proposal to the National Science Foundation Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure program. This program is the successor to the NSF program that currently funds the San Diego Supercomputer Center and will end October 1997.
Membership in the Center is open to all interested faculty members and research scientists. The Center's Executive Committee, which participates in setting the Center's goals and advises the Director on major decisions affecting the Center, will reflect the full spectrum of UCSD faculty using advanced computational methods and approaches in research and instruction.
Dr. Karin is Adjunct Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and the founding Director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center. He reports to Interim Senior Vice Chancellor Richard Attiyeh.
The Center is located in 415 Social Sciences Building, mail code 0534, telephone 45064.
