OFFICE OF THE SENIOR VICE CHANCELLOR- ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
April 9, 1997 ALL ACADEMIC/INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF ALL STUDENTS
I am pleased to announce that, effective Fall Quarter 1997, UCSD will join the University of California's Center in Washington, D.C. (UC/DC).
The Center offers exciting opportunities for students to work and study in the nation's capital while maintaining a full program of academic study. While in residence at UC/DC, students are placed in unpaid internships at governmental and private sector agencies and firms. Under the guidance of UC faculty, students will also participate in seminars and conduct independent study designed to increase their understanding of the public policy process. In session throughout the academic year, the Center internship-study program will be open to all UCSD undergraduates for one quarter of residency. Available spaces will be awarded on a competitive basis. Participants will receive up to 14 units of credit toward their
degree. The Center can also assist graduate and professional students with securing internships during the summer. Eventually, limited
space will be available for graduate students and faculty to conduct research in Washington.
UC/DC began in 1991 as a cooperative effort among several UC campuses. With the support of the Office of the President, UC/DC has
facilitated study-related internships for a growing number of UC students. UCSD will be the sixth campus to join the UC consortium. UC/DC will become an integral part of the broad collection of education experiences that UCSD offers its students. A UC/DC Faculty Oversight Committee will soon be appointed to coordinate UCSD's participation in the Washington Center.
