SUBJECT: Appointment of Pre-Planning Action Team to
Implement K-12 Outreach Task Force Proposal
I have appointed a Pre-Planning Action Team to identify and address issues related to implementation of the recently released K-12 Outreach Task Force proposal. The proposal, which outlines a comprehensive plan to increase UCSD's role in providing educational opportunities for K-12 students in San Diego, is now being reviewed by the Academic Senate. Concurrently with that review, the team will explore what would be required to implement the various components of the Task Force report: outreach, partnerships, a model school, research, teacher education and professional development, as well as the formation of a center to coordinate these activities (CREATE) and modes of evaluation and assessment of each.
Professor Peter Gourevitch (IR/PS and Political Science) has agreed to chair the team. Other members are:
Richard Attiyeh, Vice Chancellor of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies Julian Betts, Associate Professor, Economics
Michael Cole, Professor, Communication
Winifred Cox, Interim Vice Chancellor, Development and University Relations Cecil Lytle, Provost, Thurgood Marshall College
Hugh Mehan, Professor, Sociology; Director, UCSD Teacher Education Program Philip Nader, M.D., Professor, Pediatrics
Paul Saltman, Professor, Biology Faustina Solis, Professor Emerita, Family Medicine
Mary Walshok, Associate Vice Chancellor, Extended Studies Linda Williams, Assistant Chancellor
Joseph Watson, Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs John Woods, Vice Chancellor, Resource Management
I am confident that the Pre-Planning Action Team will be able to clarify many details that the K-12 Outreach Task Force was unable to explore in depth. Thus, when the Task Force proposal emerges from Academic Senate review, the campus will be able to act on its recommendations both expeditiously and prudently.
