REPORT OF INCIDENT #99-001 - BURGLARIES OF SAFES
Since September 1998, the Police Department has taken several burglary
reports where the offender(s) have targeted safes. The thefts occurred
during non-business hours with three of the thefts occurring over the
winter break. The offender(s) force their way into the building by prying
open a door. Once inside the offender(s) use a large pry bar and sledge
hammer to force the safe open, destroying the safe in the process. The
majority of the safes were rated as "Fire Safes" designed primarily to
protect the contents from fire and not theft. In all but one of the
thefts, the safe was visible through an outside window. There also have been reports of monies being taken from cash boxes that
were in locations visible to the public and from filing cabinet drawers. You are encouraged to make it as difficult as possible for any
would-be-thief to steal or gain access to your monies. If possible:
1. Use safes that are designed to protect the contents from theft. 2. Keep safes out of view.
3. Avoid storing money in filing cabinets.
4. Keep cash boxes away from areas open to the public.
5. Avoid storing large amounts of money over weekends or Holidays. 6. If you have an alarm system be sure to use it.
Anyone having information concerning these thefts is asked to telephone the
UCSD Police Department Detective Bureau at 534-4359
