SUBJECT: Establishment of the Glycobiology Research and Training Center
Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative
officials, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Glycobiology
Research and Training Center as a campus research unit reporting to Vice
Chancellor John Alksne. Professor Ajit Varki will serve as its first
Director and Professor Jeffrey Esko as Associate Director
The Center will coordinate and support interdisciplinary interactions among
faculty and students aimed at fostering glycobiology research and education
at UCSD and nearby research institutes, coordinate the provision of
state-of-the-art instrumentation, and enhance the campus's ability to obtain
grants in this area. Membership in the Center is open to all interested
faculty members and research scientists/scholars.
