SUBJECT:  Appointment of Director and Associate Director
for Center for Research in Computing and the Arts

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Professors Sheldon Brown and Miller Puckette have been appointed Director and Associate Director, respectively, of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts effective July 1, 1999.

Professor Brown has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Visual Arts since 1992. His work examines relationships between information and space, particularly as manifested in public art works and installations that combine architectural settings with mediated and computer controlled elements.

Professor Puckette came to UCSD's Music Department in 1994 from IRCAM (l'Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Musique/Acoustique) where he developed the Max computer music environment. Educated as a mathematician, he is currently working on a new real-time software system for live musical and multimedia performances.

Both Brown and Puckette have received many awards and fellowships in recognition of their work. Please join me in welcoming them as the new leaders of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts.
