SUBJECT:     Appointment of Assistant Dean for Student Affairs,
Office of Graduate Studies & Research

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Timothy Johnston as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research (OGSR). Tim succeeds David McDonald, who accepted a position with the Oregon University System.

As head of the OGSR Student Affairs unit, Tim will be responsible for: outreach, recruitment, and diversity; advising on grievances, conflict resolution, misconduct and other non-academic issues; coordination with other campus units on matters relating to housing, health insurance, career advising, counseling, sexual harassment, and collective bargaining; and planning for orientation and commencement.

Tim comes to OGSR from the UCSD office of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach where he served as Associate Director. Tim earned a Master's in Counseling degree in 1985 in a program with a community and multi cultural focus, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities in 1974.

I am delighted that Tim has agreed to accept this position, and I anticipate a smooth and successful transition. Tim may be reached at x43871, tjohnston@ucsd.edu, on January 18, 2000.
