SUBJECT:   Name Changes of Center for Advanced Computational Science and Engineering
and the Institute for Biomedical Engineering

Following consultation with the Academic Senate and other appropriate campus organizations, the following name changes have been made:

Center for Advanced Computational Science and Engineering to San Diego Supercomputer Center

Institute for Biomedical Engineering to The Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering

The Center for Advanced Computational Science and Engineering was established in 1996 during the period of time in which the San Diego Supercomputer Center was being managed by GA and UCSD was preparing the proposal for the National Science Foundation to continue funding a national supercomputing center in San Diego and for the management of that center to be transferred to UCSD. Now that SDSC has been firmly established as a UCSD entity, an organizational unit distinct from SDSC is no longer needed.

The Institute for Biomedical Engineering has been renamed The Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering in recognition of Whitaker's exceptional support for the development of bioengineering programs and facilities at UCSD.
