SUBJECT:    Internal Audit Services Name Change

Effective immediately, Internal Audit Services (IAS) has been retitled to Audit and Management Advisory Services (AMAS). This new name reflects Internal Audit's commitment to provide audit and advisory services to the campus community that are highly responsive to management's needs in a rapidly changing environment.

Internal auditing is an independent objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization's operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic approach to the evaluation and improvement of risk management, control, and organizational processes. Audit projects typically have a financial, operational, compliance, information systems, or combined focus.

During the past few years, Internal Audit has expanded its services to provide a greater emphasis on preventative activities such as involvement in reengineering and system development efforts, strategic committees, and internal control education and training. Most recently, in collaboration with the Campus Controller, Internal Audit has implemented a Business Processes Self-Assessment Program (BPSA) in support of the campus management control and accountability initiatives. The purpose of BPSA is to enhance awareness of business practices and systems of internal control in a complex, decentralized, University environment, and to improve controls by enabling those people performing the work to identify the risks inherent in their work environment. Currently, BPSA techniques are being integrated as appropriate into our routinely scheduled internal audits.

Internal Audit also acts as the liaison for campus external audits performed by federal and state agencies, and is a valuable information resource for those departments or programs that may be selected for review. Questions related to internal audit may be directed to Stephanie Burke, Director of AMAS, at 534-3617 or shburke@ucsd.edu.
