SUBJECT:  COMMUNITY SAFETY ALERT - (Wallet Thefts Update)

During the past eight weeks, more than 19 wallet thefts have occurred on the UCSD campus. The thefts have taken place during the work week and during normal business hours. In each incident, the offender(s) simply entered an unlocked and unattended office/laboratory and removed the wallet from a purse. The thefts went undetected until the owner attempted to retrieve his/her wallet, only to discover the property was missing.

Since our last Community Safety Alert on March 13, 2000, regarding this topic, UCSD community members have reported several incidents involving suspicious individuals. However, we have not identified those responsible for these thefts. Please continue to be on the lookout and immediately report any suspicious activity. As a reminder, lock your office doors/labs when away from the area and secure all personal belongings.

Anyone having information regarding these wallet thefts is asked to call the UCSD Police Department Detective Bureau at 534-4359.
