ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Healthcare)

SUBJECT:  Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk
http://www.ucsd.edu/5k

In the spirit of broad campus involvement in the Chancellor's Challenge 5-K Run/Walk for Scholars, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay on October 27th, the day of the event for staff employees who are participants and for those who are playing a supporting role for this event. Supervisors may allow two hours of release time for staff to participate when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties.

Since I first launched the event in 1996, the Chancellor's Challenge has raised more than $300,000 for undergraduate scholarships. This fall we were able to award 52 scholarships to outstanding UCSD students as a result of last year's proceeds. We look forward to building on that success on October 27.

What's the Challenge?

I will personally donate $25 to UCSD undergraduate scholarships for every person who beats me. Event Chairman Charlie Robins and I have agreed to donate up to a total of $55,000, to match top event sponsorships.

Any other challenges?

Associated Students vs. Chancellor Dynes
If the AS President beats me, I will donate funds towards the AS BBQ. If I beat the AS President, the AS President will wash my car -- rain or shine.

Professor Frances Dynes Hellman Challenge
Professor Frances Dynes Hellman will donate $25 towards undergraduate scholarships for every woman who beats her!

Ed Holmes, Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences Challenge
Vice Chancellor Ed Holmes, M.D. will pay an additional $25 towards undergraduate scholarships for every staff, faculty, or student in Health Sciences who beats me! At the registration table, don't forget to let them know you are from Health Sciences.

Shuttle busses will provide transportation to and from the race for participating Medical Center employees. The shuttle will depart the Medical Center at 11:00 a.m. and will depart after the Challenge at 1:30 p.m. You can check the shuttle web site at http://Parking.UCSD.Edu/shuttle/shmed.html for schedules.

The Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk will start at 12:15 p.m. from the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC, and continues along a new course that weaves through campus. Please contact Ken Grosse at 534-4211 to discuss requests for alternative accessible arrangements or accommodations.

Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. For entry forms, payroll deduction forms, and more information about this one-of-a-kind event, please visit the Chancellor's Challenge web page address at http://www.ucsd.edu/5k. Participants who have already registered can pick up their bib number and T-shirt at RIMAC on October 26th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may also call x21537 for further information.

I look forward to a great event and lots of fun!
