SUBJECT:  The UCSD Veterans Association Recognition Ceremony

I am pleased to announce and encourage faculty, staff and students to participate in the UCSD Veterans Associations' first annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony. The Ceremony will commemorate the sacrifices made by veterans in defense of our country and their contributions to the advancement of higher education. The Recognition Ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2000 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. at the Muir College Common's Sequoia Room.

The Honorable Bob Filner, Member of the United States House of Representatives for the 50th Congressional District of the State of California, will be the featured speaker and will also preside over the installation of the UCSD Veterans Association's officers. The Veterans Association will bestow special recognition on Richard C. Atkinson, President of the University of California, for his leadership in designating Veterans Day as an official holiday for all University employees. Rogers Davis, Assistant Vice Chancellor - Human Resources, will be recognized for authorizing the official recognition of the UCSD Veterans Association. Certificates of appreciation will be issued to Congressman Filner and to the Veterans of a Foreign War - Post 3788 of Kearny Mesa who will provide the color guard for the opening and closing of the event.

To support the Veterans Association Recognition Ceremony, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay so that employees may attend the event. Therefore, supervisors are encouraged to grant employees one hour of administrative leave to attend the Ceremony when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties.

Inquiries regarding the events may be directed to Nick Aguilar, UCSD Veterans Association President, (858) 534-6225; Richard Belmontez, Healthcare Coordinator, (619) 543-7577; Larry Riddle, SIO Coordinator, (858) 534-1869; or Jorge Rios, Communications Coordinator, (858) 822-0506.

I hope that each of you can join us as we remember the contributions of all veterans and to acknowledge the veterans who are members of the UCSD community.
