OFFICE OF ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR -
HUMAN RESOURCES

December 6, 2000

KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:  Approved Changes to Student Wages

In October you were notified of proposed salary range increases for the student classifications of Assistant II-IV (Title Codes 4919-4921). These proposed increases were recently approved. Ranges have been increased by 2.0%, except for the minimum of the Assistant II range, which will remain set at the state minimum wage of $5.75/hour.

The new salary ranges effective October 1, 2000 are:

4922 Assistant I no longer in use
4921 Assistant II $5.75 - $8.49/hour
4920 Assistant III $6.90 - $11.14/hour
4919 Assistant IV $9.55 - $19.64/hour

These classifications have "By-Agreement" rates; therefore, individuals do not receive an automatic range adjustment unless an increase is required to bring their rate up to the minimum of the range established for the class. Student rates that were active in PPS as of 11/17/00 and set below the new range minimums shown above, were centrally adjusted to the new minimums retroactive to 10/1/00 for students paid monthly or biweekly. The new rate of pay including retroactive adjustments, will be reflected in the 12/1/00 monthly and 12/6/00 biweekly paychecks. A report of affected student employees was distributed to department contacts on November 20.

Within-range salary increases may be provided to individuals in these classes at the discretion of the department. The following criteria is provided to guide departments in determining the timing and amount of any increase they recommend.

a) In accordance with the local implementing procedure (HR-S-1) for Staff Personnel Policy 30, Salary, Section IIC, students employed in casual-restricted positions are eligible for a merit increase after completing twelve months on pay status since the most recent date of hire or last within range increase.

b) The increase may be any amount in terms of whole cents per hour and whole dollars per month up to an amount equaling a maximum of 4.5%.
