SUBJECT:  New Minimum Wage

Effective January 1, 2001 the minimum wage in the State of California will be increased from $5.75 to $6.25 per hour. Although the University of California is not required to comply with this new wage order, in the interest of keeping University wages competitive with the market, the minimum wage for UCSD will also be increased to $6.25 per hour.

The only payroll title in use that is affected by this increase is the Assistant II (TC 4921) which has an existing salary range minimum of $5.75 per hour. Therefore, the minimum of the Assistant II salary range will increase to $6.25 per hour effective December 24, 2000 for employees paid biweekly, and January 1, 2001 for employees paid monthly. Any students who are currently employed at a rate lower than $6.25 per hour will be centrally adjusted to the new minimum. A report confirming the rate changes will be mailed to department contacts.

Additionally, there may be by-agreement rates that have been negotiated reflecting an equivalent hourly rate that is less than the new minimum. Key Administrators are advised to review any by-agreement rates that have been negotiated and consider adjusting them as necessary to reflect a minimum compensation level of $6.25 per hour.

Please share this information with supervisors and affected employees in your area. Any questions regarding this change may be addressed to Judy Johnson, Compensation Manager, at (858) 534-0986 or via electronic mail at jjohnson@ucsd.edu.
