SUBJECT:  School of Medicine Dean for Scientific Affairs

Dear Colleagues:

As many of you may know, Dr. George E. Palade moved to Emeritus status the first of the year after having served as Dean for Scientific Affairs for ten years. Under Dr. Palade's leadership the School of Medicine and UCSD experienced a remarkable growth and enrichment in scientific programs and development of one of the strongest research faculties in the nation.

I anticipate launching a search for the next Dean for Scientific Affairs in the near future, and in the interim I have asked Dr. Gordon Gill to serve as Interim Dean for Scientific Affairs. Dr. Gill brings a wealth of experience to this position from his role as Director of the Faculty of Basic Biomedical Sciences and his vantagepoint as an internationally recognized scholar in signal transduction and hormone action. In this interim period, Dr. Palade and Dr. Daniel Steinberg will join Dr. Gill in serving as an Advisory Committee to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences on a range of basic science issues.

Please join me in thanking George Palade for his extraordinary contributions to UCSD over the last ten years and in welcoming Gordon Gill to the position of Interim Dean for Scientific Affairs.

                                                Sincerely,

                                                Edward W. Holmes, M.D.
                                                Vice Chancellor
