SUBJECT:  The UCSD Personal Floating Holiday

On October 9, 2000, Chancellor Robert C. Dynes issued a Notice to announce that the UCSD Personal Floating Holiday would be implemented on January 1, 2001. The Notice indicated that the Personal Floating Holiday replaced the Spring Administrative Holiday, which was usually scheduled for the third Monday in March each year; and that the Personal Holiday was intended to offer members of the UCSD community greater flexibility for time off with pay at the discretion of the employee with supervisory approval. Members of the UCSD community previously eligible for the Spring Administrative Holiday are now eligible for the Personal Holiday in accordance with respective Academic Personnel Policies, Staff Personnel Policies, and Collective Bargaining Agreements.

For this initial year of implementation and effective immediately, employees with appointments that begin prior to or on April 1st (or the first working day in April) in their first year of employment are eligible for the Personal Floating holiday.

The verification of hours earned, the requirement that hours earned must be taken in a single absence during the year (April 1st through the following March 31st), and the condition that hours earned cannot be rolled-over to the next year have not been changed. The UCSD Implementing Procedure, 40/Holidays, has been revised to incorporate the eligibility criteria as stated above. The UCSD Implementing Procedure, 40/Holidays, is accessible on the Human Resources website at:
http://www-hr.ucsd.edu/~qwl/policies/index.html#policy40

To enhance the verification of personal holiday hours available, system modifications have been made to the Leave Activity Summary Report (LASR). The LASR supports departments' verification of personal holiday hours available to their employees, and serves to remind employees to schedule personal holiday time off.

Inquiries regarding this Notice should be directed to Mary Ann Mead at mmead@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-4115.
