SUBJECT:  Appointment of Director of Graduate Student Academic
                     Affairs

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Allen as Director of Graduate Student Academic Affairs, effective June 18, 2001. Mary fills the position formerly held by Roberta Weil, who has retired.

Mary previously served for 11 years in the Department of History as Student Affairs Coordinator. In that capacity, she worked closely with the chair and the faculty and was responsible for the overall management and advising of the student affairs operation including all graduate student functions pertaining to graduate student support, course scheduling, academic requirements and programs, policy and procedure interpretation and implementation.

In OGSR, Mary's responsibilities include coordinating all graduate student academic and degree matters, managing graduate program reviews, and helping to guide new degree proposals through the University approval process. She consults and serves as a liaison with deans, department chairs, advisors, faculty, and staff; the Academic Senate; the UC Office of the President; other UC graduate offices; and various national organizations.
