SUBJECT:  Travel Reimbursement to Foreign Visitors

The Office of the President has made an official announcement to the campuses regarding the ability to reimburse foreign visitors for their travel expenses.

We are pleased to advise you that Business travelers with a B-1 visa or a WB classification can be reimbursed for actual travel expenses without having to complete the Certification of Academic Activity form. In addition, reimbursement to B-1 and WB visa holders is not limited to the previously imposed nine-day academic activity restriction.

This change does not affect reimbursement to travelers with a B-2 visa or a WT classification. Travelers visiting on a B-2 visa or a WT classification are considered tourists and are eligible for reimbursement of actual travel expenses only upon completing the certification of Academic Activity form and meeting the stipulations detailed on the form. As in the past, travelers who are classified as tourists are ineligible for reimbursement of travel expenses if the duration of academic activity exceeds 9 days.

If you need to know more about the history of these visas and the Certification of Academic Activity Form, please access:

Please direct comments and questions either to Travel@UCSD.edu or telephone at x43734.
