SUBJECT:  Change in Leadership in Department of Pathology,
                     School of Medicine

David N. Bailey, M.D., Chair of Pathology since 1986, has agreed to serve as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Deputy Dean of the School of Medicine on an interim basis, while national searches are conducted to fill some new senior administrative positions in the Health Sciences. Earlier this year, Dr. Bailey announced his plans to step down as Chair when his current term ends in 2004. I commend him for his exceptional leadership as Chair, and appreciate his willingness to continue sharing his experience and expertise by returning to Health Sciences Administration. He served as Interim Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine in 1999-2000, providing steady guidance and overseeing many critical initiatives for the Health Sciences during an important transitional period. A member of the faculty since 1977, Dr. Bailey's professional memberships include the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, for which he served as President, and which has honored him with the Gerald T. Evans Award. He is also member and Past-President of the California Association of Toxicologists, and served as Secretary-Treasurer for the Association of Pathology Chairs.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Henry C. Powell, M.D., D.Sc., as Interim Chair of Pathology. A search for a permanent Chair will begin in the Fall.

Dr. Powell, a respected neuropathologist, has recently served as Vice Chair for Campus Affairs of the Department of Pathology and for many years served as Chief of Anatomic and Neuropathology. He also was Interim Chair in 1999-2000. He is an Attending Pathologist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and a member of the American Association of Pathologists and the World Federation of Neurology. He served as President of the San Diego County Pathology Society and is currently on their Board of Governors. He is Co-Chief Editor of the Journal of Peripheral Nervous Systems and is on the Editorial Board of Acta Neuropathologica. He earned his M.D. and D.Sc. from the National University of Ireland and conducted post-graduate work at Philadelphia General Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and through UCSD at UCSD Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He joined the UCSD faculty in 1976 after a year as Instructor at Harvard Medical School.
