SUBJECT:  Appointment of Associate Vice Chancellor for
                     Undergraduate Education

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Mark Appelbaum as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education. Professor Appelbaum received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Illinois in 1968. Prior to joining the UCSD Department of Psychology in 1996, he was on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University. He will assume this newly created post effective August 2, 2001.

The creation of this position was the result of broad consultation and endorsement by the Academic Senate, and faculty from across the General Campus. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education will be responsible for initiatives and programs that will improve undergraduate education.

Professor Appelbaum is completing his term as Chair of the UCSD Admissions Committee, and will begin his appointment as the San Diego representative to the systemwide Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (BOARS) this fall.

I am confident that Mark Appelbaum's service as Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education will help to enhance the quality of undergraduate education at UCSD. Please join me in welcoming Professor Appelbaum to Academic Affairs.
