SUBJECT:  Appointment of Chief of Staff

I am pleased to announce that Thomas Jackiewicz, currently Senior Associate Chair for Finance and Administration in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University, has accepted our offer to become Chief of Staff, UCSD Health Sciences, effective January 7, 2002.

In this newly created position, Tom will assist me in coordinating and operationalizing the many initiatives underway within the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy/Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Medical Group. As a member of the senior leadership team, he will work closely with the team to provide an efficient and service-oriented administrative infrastructure for the educational, research and clinical programs across the Health Sciences organization.

Tom has had a stellar career in academic administration at the University of Pennsylvania, Oregon Health Sciences University and Stanford University. After receiving a Masters in Public Health degree from Columbia University, he gained extensive management and financial experience in academic administration and physician practice operations at the aforementioned institutions. He is an innovative administrator, having led initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania that enhanced GME funding for all the clinical departments at that institution, and efforts at Stanford that restructured physician compensation and reorganized the department infrastructure.

In addition to his operational expertise, Tom has an exceptional ability to interact with academicians and administrators, and I am confident he will be a strong addition to the excellent team of senior staff members already present at UCSD.

Tom will be spending several weeks periodically at UCSD between now and January to meet with the leadership and staff in the Health Sciences and on the main campus, and to learn as much as possible about UCSD before his arrival. Please join me in welcoming Tom to UCSD and help him to understand the opportunities and challenges we face this institution.
