SUBJECT:  Faculty Fellows Program -- Call for Nominations

The University of California initiated a new Faculty Fellows Program in 2000. The purpose of the program is to provide new UC Ph.D.s with mentored training and experience in the design and conduct of instructional courses and research; and provide high-quality teaching of undergraduate courses to help accommodate projected large undergraduate enrollment growth over the next decade.

Faculty Fellows have a research and a teaching mentor (who may be the same person). Fellows are appointed at 100% time and typically devote half time to undergraduate teaching and half time to research. Salary is $35,940 (plus annual range adjustments) for nine months. Faculty Fellows may be appointed for up to two ninths in the summer with funding from grants or discretionary departmental resources. It is anticipated that five to six new two-year awards will be made for the period Fall 2002 through Spring 2004.

Nominees must either (a) have received their Ph.D. or M.F.A. no more than six months prior to their appointment begin date or (b) be advanced to candidacy, in the final stages of writing their dissertation, and projected to complete all requirements for the degree by September 26, 2002. U.C. M.F.A.s are eligible to be nominated at UCSD if the nominating department employs ladder-rank faculty with M.F.A.s in the nominee's subfield.

Selection criteria include (1) nominee's qualifications and promise for excellence in teaching and research; (2) proposed teaching and research programs; (3) plan for mentoring of the nominee; and (4) the extent to which the department in which the Fellow will be teaching has a heavy undergraduate workload.

UCSD Ph.D.s may be considered for these awards at any of the eight UC general campuses. At UCSD, nominating departments are restricted to General Campus departments with both graduate and undergraduate instructional programs. The schedule is as follows:

- Deadline for candidates to apply to departments: November 16, 2001
- Deadline for departmental nominations to OGSR: December 14, 2001
- Deadline for divisional deans' comments to OGSR: January 14, 2002
- Announcement of Fellows: February 2002
