SUBJECT:  Appointment of Chief of Police

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Orville King as UCSD's new Chief of Police, effective July 1, 2002. Orville is filling the position held by Maudie Bobbitt who retired earlier this year.

Mr. King is a native Californian and has had a career in law enforcement for the past 32 years. He was with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for over 30 years, has managed all police services at Orange County's John Wayne Airport and was responsible for the Sheriff's Air Support Bureau and Mounted Enforcement Unit. His most recent position was Captain with the Seal Beach Police Department. His law enforcement career has been broad-based, including the traditional law enforcement assignments of patrol, investigation and administration as well as focusing on developing and directing programs and projects. He has a Master's degree in Public Administration from California State University, Northridge, is a graduate of the California State Command College, and the FBI National Academy.
