SUBJECT:  Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life

I am pleased to announce that Carmen Vazquez has joined Student Affairs as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life (formerly designated Student Programs and Facilities), effective July 1, 2002. Ms. Vazquez fills the position held by Tom Tucker, who retired November, 2001.

Ms. Vazquez has had twenty years of experience in providing leadership and administrative direction to student services programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook where she also earned her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Sociology and her Masters of Social Work. She began her career at SUNY as Area Coordinator of the Department of Resident Life and later became Associate Director and Director of Student Union and Activities. Since 1995, she has served as Dean of Students where she managed the Offices of Student Activities, University Campus Centers, and Commuter Student Services. She functioned as chief student advocate for 21,000 students and was responsible for designing two campus centers. During that time, Ms. Vazquez also served as interim Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations to enhance collaboration and communication between parents, alumni and students. As an adjunct faculty in the School of Social Welfare, she has developed and taught undergraduate and graduate courses on student community development, cross cultural communities, and theory and practice in leadership.

We are very pleased to have AVC Vazquez join Student Affairs and I hope you will join us in welcoming her to UCSD. She can be reached at Ext. 4-4378 or cmvazquez@ucsd.edu.
