SUBJECT:  2002 Annual Notice on Substance Abuse

Each year the faculty, staff and students of the University of California are reminded of UCSD's commitment to a campus environment free from the problems of substance abuse. For this purpose, key administrators should post this Notice in a visible area.

In spite of the warnings regarding the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs, these substances continue to be some of the leading causes of death in this country. In San Diego County, there continues to be a significant number of individuals admitted to drug treatment programs, deaths resulting from drug overdoses, and arrests for drug offenses.

If you or someone you know has a problem with substance abuse, you are encouraged to contact one of the following support services for strictly confidential, cost-free assistance:

*Faculty and Staff Assistance Program on campus at (858) 534-5523;

*Healthcare employees should contact the Managed Health Network at (888) 426-0023;

*The UCSD Medical Center Physician Well-Being Committee (PWBC) is a standing Committee of the Medical Staff and, as such, is afforded confidentiality protection under California Evidence Code 1157. The main focus of the PWBC is to provide impaired practitioners with a non-punitive avenue for addressing and resolving their impairments. Contact Chris Mathews, M.D., at Pager number 619-544-3704; and

*Students should contact Psychological and Counseling Services at (858) 534-3755.

A publication entitled "Substance Abuse Program Guide - An Official Notice to Academic and Staff Employees and Students," is available and provides information on substance abuse; where help is available; and the requirements for reporting convictions for and consequences of substance abuse while on University business or property. The Guide has been revised and is accessible at: http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/substance.

Copies of the Substance Abuse Program Guide are also available at the Human Resources Department, Policy Development and Quality of Work/Life Division at (858) 534-9569.

Please join me in reaffirming the University's commitment to a workplace free from the problems of substance abuse.
