ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Healthcare)

SUBJECT:  Proposition 47

As UCSD continues its rapid rise as a leader among U.S. research universities, our need for physical space rises concomitantly. In response to requests we receive for information about UCSD's physical growth plans and funding sources, we want to direct your attention to Proposition 47 on the Nov. 5, 2002 state ballot.

Proposition 47, the K-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of 2002, if approved by voters, will provide $13 billion for K-12 and higher education facilities for the next two years. Of the $1.5 billion to fund higher education facilities, the University of California would receive $345 million each year for two years.

Projects which would be funded at UCSD include a Pharmaceutical Sciences Building, a Biomedical Library Renovation and Addition, a Student Academic Services Facility, a Campus Emergency Services Facility, an Applied Physics and Mathematics Renovation, and a Mayer Hall Physics Addition and Renovation.

Supporters of Proposition 47 include the UC Board of Regents, the California State PTA, California Taxpayers Association, California Chamber of Commerce and California Taxpayers Association. Signers of the ballot argument in opposition to Proposition 47 include State Sen. William J. (Pete) Knight, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and the National Tax Limitation Committee.
