SUBJECT:  Assistant Vice Chancellor Richard Backer

I regret to announce that Dr. Richard Backer, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Enrollment Management/Registrar, has informed me that he is unable to return to his duties for medical reasons.

During Rich's 8-year tenure at UCSD, relations with community colleges and secondary schools were greatly strengthened, freshmen and transfer applications to UCSD doubled, and StudentLink was successfully developed and implemented along with many other notable achievements.

I am certain that Rich's many friends and colleagues join me in expressing gratitude for his outstanding leadership and service and wishing him the very best.

A formal search to permanently fill the Assistant Vice Chancellor position will be conducted in the near future. In the interim, I am pleased to report that Mae Brown has agreed to continue to serve as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor.
