ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS

SUBJECT:  Gender Equity Task Force Report

I am writing to inform you that the Gender Equity Task Force Report, a study of the UCSD Academic Senate faculty over a 4-year period, is available on the web at:
http://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/svcaa/offices/apo/reports/GETF/GETF.htm The issues involved are important and have generated much discussion and study at many universities. In order to determine whether there may be gender bias in the treatment of female faculty at UCSD, the Task Force made a substantial effort on behalf of the campus in assessing a broad range of recruitment, retention, resource, advancement and salary issues for ladder rank faculty. They have made a number of recommendations for addressing the inequities and concerns that they did identify.

I have asked the Academic Senate as well as our Deans and Department Chairs to review and comment on the report and its recommendations. After such consultation, I will be able to consider how best to move forward. I believe you will find the report to be comprehensive and informative. Gender equity is vital to all members of the University community. Please take the time to read the report and to share your views with your chair. I will also be pleased to receive your comments directly at mchandler@ucsd.edu.
