ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:  Education Outreach

UCSD's faculty, staff and students work hard to reach out to K-14 students, teachers and parents. However, each of us often has very little knowledge of the other outreach efforts going on around campus. Knowing what our colleagues are doing in other departments and divisions is important if we are to help students and teachers navigate the resources UCSD has to offer. Colleagueship benefits us as well--allowing us to be more effective by leveraging each other's expertise and working together to solve common problems.

For these reasons, we have been working to help bring together UCSD folks involved in education outreach. This began with an initial meeting in October, which was attended by more than 30 people from all over campus involved in K-14 education. The second meeting will be held in January and we also hope to hold a poster fair of education outreach programs in the coming quarter (for teachers who want to know more about these programs and for faculty, staff and students who want to get involved in education outreach).

We have also begun to develop a "Science Education and Exploration" website that links to all of these different outreach programs and resources (with a focus on math and the sciences, also including general academics, college prep etc.), but we can't complete the site without your help. A draft of the site is posted to http://see.ucsd.edu . If your program information is missing or has changed, please let us know!

Finding out who is involved in education outreach on campus has been a "grass roots" effort and we apologize if you did not hear about the first meeting. Please contact Sherry Seethaler <sseethaler@ucsd.edu> if you are interested in knowing more and especially if you have a program that should be listed on the SEE website.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
