SUBJECT:  Bonus Off-Scale Salary Awards

After consultation with Academic Senate committees, deans, and faculty, a proposal for changes in the award of bonus off-scale salaries has been approved and will take effect July 1, 2003, for July 1, 2004, actions.

The goals of these changes are to improve equity in awarding bonus off-scale salaries, to eliminate the negative impact of tapering awards, and to simplify the academic review process.

Bonus off-scale salary awards will now be paid over a single review period. Awards will be made in one-half step increments. Payments will occur monthly for each year of the review period, ending at the time of the next review. If an individual receives an off-cycle accelerated advancement during the bonus award period, the bonus award will end immediately prior to the effective date of the accelerated advancement. For individuals who are not advanced at the next review following the award of the bonus, the bonus will be reduced at the time of annual salary range adjustments and/or future advancements, so that there is no reduction in salary.

Please note: All those who currently have bonus off-scale awards will not be affected by the new policy until their current awards end.

Bonus off-scale salary awards will continue to be range-adjusted, to be covered compensation for the University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP), and to be used as the basis for determining summer salary rates. Criteria for award of the bonus off-scales will remain unchanged. For further information, please contact the Academic Personnel analyst responsible for your department or unit.
