OFFICE OF THE SENIOR VICE CHANCELLOR -
ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

June 30, 2003

ALL ACADEMICS (including SIO and School of Medicine)

SUBJECT:  Associate Vice Chancellor - Academic Personnel (50%)

After consultation with the Academic Senate, Deans, and Department Chairs, I am pleased to advise you of the establishment of a half-time position of Associate Vice Chancellor - Academic Personnel (AVC-AP).

Given our impending growth, numerous initiatives are being proposed to streamline and improve the academic personnel process here at UCSD. The AVC-AP will play a key role by both providing guidance and leadership and maintaining consultative processes as we consider these initiatives. The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs will continue to maintain sole and full responsibility for faculty appointment and promotion files in the academic review process.

The new AVC-AP position, which will be similar to those on other UC campuses, will:

* Provide leadership on personnel process improvement initiatives;
* Coordinate the development and revision of academic personnel procedures;
* Provide leadership on the development of a campus academic personnel information system and a file management system;
* Serve as a liaison for collective bargaining and contract administration for academic employees;
* Provide counsel on faculty misconduct and non-Senate grievance matters; and
* Oversee the streamlining of review processes for non-Senate academics.

In order to qualify for the position, candidates must have the academic credentials to qualify for appointment as a full professor at UCSD.

I would very much appreciate your nominations, including self-nominations, of potential candidates for the position of AVC-AP. Please send suggestions to me at mchandler@ucsd.edu by July 22, 2003.
