OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR
HOUSING AND DINING SERVICES

July 2, 2003

KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF (excluding UCSD Healthcare)

SUBJECT:  Vending Operations

Housing and Dining Services is responsible for developing and managing several primary agreements for food and beverage vending machines for a majority of the main campus. We also work with other campus departments (Business Affairs, Student Affairs and Real Estate Development) to review requests for coffee/food carts and identify opportunities for meeting the needs of our campus community.

Currently we are in the process of assessing both of the above programs' existing sites and are requesting assistance from the campus in identifying any perceived needs for additional coffee carts, beverage or snack vending machines. It would be helpful if you could let us know if you feel that your area (or any other area that you are aware of) could benefit from this addition. Key to any successful location is pedestrian traffic flow, accessible utilities, and visibility to the customer.

As we review our current locations, we will take your suggestions into consideration and determine, given our commitment of revenues, whether it would be financially viable. The majority of the revenue from the vending machines is allocated back into student programs through the Colleges and Office of Graduate Studies and Research as well as helping us maintain affordable room and board prices.

For those potential locations that fall outside Housing and Dining Services management, we will pass your comments to the appropriate group responsible.

We thank you and would appreciate having any suggestions sent to Corliss Vargo, Housing and Dining Services, cvargo@ucsd.edu by Friday, July 11, 2003.
