MARSHA A. CHANDLER APPOINTED
UC SAN DIEGO ACTING CHANCELLOR

University of California President Richard C. Atkinson, acting in consultation with President-designate Robert C. Dynes, announced today his intention to appoint Marsha A. Chandler as acting Chancellor of the UC San Diego campus, pending approval by the Board of Regents at their September 17-18 meeting.

Chandler's appointment would be effective October 2, following current Chancellor Dynes' assumption of responsibilities as the 18th president of the 10-campus system.

"Marsha Chandler is an outstanding scholar and an exceptional academic administrator. President-designate Dynes and I greatly appreciate Dr. Chandler's willingness to take on this important responsibility. We know she will do an excellent job," said Atkinson, who is retiring on October 1 after eight years as UC president.

"For our campus and the UC system, this is an extraordinarily challenging period that will demand thoughtful and wise decisions by our leadership team. Marsha is a dynamic leader who has the vision, experience and judgment to guide the campus and ensure that UCSD maintains its remarkable momentum," said Dynes.

Chandler will serve as acting Chancellor until a permanent Chancellor is named. A nationwide search for a replacement will be initiated in the next few weeks, and a panel of regents, faculty, students, alumni, foundation and staff representatives will be named to serve as members of the Advisory Committee. President-designate Dynes will chair the search, which is expected to take approximately six months.

"It is an honor to assume the role of Acting Chancellor at a time of major challenges and also substantial opportunities," said Chandler. "Working with the UCSD leadership team, my highest priority will be to uphold the tradition of educational excellence and innovation that characterizes this campus and propelled it so quickly into the ranks of the nation's leading research universities."

A renowned scholar of public policy and organizational behavior, Chandler has served as UCSD's Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs since August 1997, where she oversees all phases of academic planning, programs and personnel. The Senior Vice Chancellor is also UCSD's chief operating officer, the campus' second-ranking executive officer, and acts on behalf of the Chancellor in his absence. Previously, she was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Toronto. In that position for seven years, she directed the academic activities of 30 departments, seven colleges and two campuses.

Between 1986 and 1997, Chandler was a full professor in Toronto's political science department, serving as chair from 1986-90, and a member of its law school faculty, where her research has focused on public policy, federalism, and trade policy. Chandler has also held academic positions at Harvard University as a visiting professor at the Center for International Affairs and as a resident scholar at Currier House.

Born in Bristol, Virginia, Chandler grew up in New York City and went to the Bronx High School of Science. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of the City of New York, and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. Chandler has written extensively on a wide range of comparative public policy issues. She was selected in 1995 as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the most distinguished academic honor for scholars in Canada. In 2003 she received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Toronto.

Chandler is the author of five books, including Trade and Transitions: A Comparative Analysis of Adjustment and the Political Economy of Business Bailouts, as well as many articles and book chapters.

A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Chandler serves on several boards, including the Board of Directors Fulbright Program (Canada-U.S. Foundation for Educational Exchange), the Board of Directors of the San Diego Opera and the Foundation for the Children of the Californias. In Toronto she was a Trustee of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Hunstman Marine Science Center, and the Ontario Lightwave and Laser Research Center. She also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Federal Judicial Appointments and the board of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

According to the Regents' standing orders, the president may appoint an acting Chancellor for a period not to exceed one year. That appointment and compensation for the acting Chancellor are subject to confirmation by the Board of Regents.

If approved by the Regents, Chandler would receive an administrative stipend of $68,100 to her current annual salary of $212,600 for her service as acting Chancellor.
