ALL ACADEMICS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    Implementation of New Salary Scales and Title Codes for Project Scientists

Effective January 1, 2004, UCSD implemented new UC-wide salary scales and title codes for the Project (e.g., Scientist) series. The new salary scales include a scale for Business, Management, and Engineering (B&E) and a scale for other disciplines.

All new Project Scientist appointments with appointment dates on or after January 1, 2004, are to be made according to the new UC-wide salary scales and title codes.

Project Scientists in disciplines other than engineering who were employed prior to January 1, 2004, will maintain their current salaries through the use of transition off-scale components. The transition off-scale components will be maintained for these individuals for the duration of their careers as Project Scientists at UCSD.

In engineering departments, Project Scientists Steps I and II, Associate Project Scientists at all steps, and Assistant Project Scientists at all steps who were employed prior to January 1, 2004, may begin transitioning to the new Business, Management, and Engineering salary scale effective January 1, 2004, if funding permits. At least 50% of the salary adjustment is to be implemented by July 1, 2004, and the full salary adjustment is to be completed by July 1, 2005. Project Scientists in engineering disciplines at Step III and above will maintain their current salaries through the use of transition off-scale components, and these off-scale components will be maintained for the duration of their careers as Project Scientists at UCSD. The Academic Personnel Office and the Office of Graduate Studies and Research are coordinating this transition.

During December and January, the Academic Personnel Office has arranged for the title codes of all Project Scientists who were employed prior to January 1, 2004, to be changed to the new title codes in the Payroll/Personnel System.
