ACADEMIC SENATE: SAN DIEGO DIVISION

February 17, 2004

MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY

SUBJECT:    February 24, 2004 Meeting

Dear Colleagues:

I hope you will attend our meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, at 3:30 p.m., in Garren Auditorium, Room 1105 in the Basic Science Building. The Notice of Meeting (agenda) and all pertinent documents may be found on the Senate's Web page at:

http://www-senate.ucsd.edu/assembly/0304/agenda/040224/age.htm

In addition to announcements from Acting Chancellor Chandler and the Division Chair, Campus Ombudsperson Judith Bruner will inform us of the role and work of the UCSD Office of the Ombuds. We will also receive the annual reports of five Senate committees and adopt memorial resolutions for Jon Irwin Isenberg and Zeno Vendler.

One important item of business will be consideration of nominations for vacancies on the Committee on Committees. I direct your attention to page 5 of the agenda packet, which reflects the status of nominations to date. Nominations may also be made from the floor; however, should you wish to nominate a colleague, please make sure that the individual is willing to serve if elected. Owing to a resignation, we will also be asked to appoint a replacement member for the Committee on Committees.

The Committee on Committees will present a revision of Bylaw 185(B), which governs the manner of election of its members. The proposed amendments (beginning on page 14) address the methods by which replacement members may be appointed owing to unexpected resignations or absences. The Committee on Rules and Jurisdiction will propose amendment of a number of Division bylaws. The revisions, which begin with the Committee's report on page 16, are required to bring the local bylaws into compliance with systemwide bylaws governing appointment of the Division's representatives to systemwide committees.

For instructions on how to access the Web site or to obtain a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, please contact the Academic Senate Office at extension 4-3640. If your preference is to receive a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, your name will be place on a Senate mailing list. To request that your name be placed on this list, contact the Academic Senate Office at the above number.

Please mark your calendars for 3:30 p.m. on February 24th. I look forward to seeing you then.

Sincerely,

Jan B. Talbot, Chair
Academic Senate, San Diego Division
