SUBJECT:    Elizabeth Bates Memorial - February 15, 2004

A memorial to honor and remember Professor Elizabeth Bates will be held on Sunday, February 15, at 10 AM. The memorial will take place in the Frederic de Hoffmann Auditorium, The Salk Institute.

Liz came to UCSD in 1981 as a member of the Department of Psychology. She helped to found the Department of Cognitive Science, and joined that department in 1988. Since 1994, she was Director of the Center for Research in Language and Director of the Project in Cognitive and Neural Development. Liz was a pioneer in many fields, including language acquisition, child development, aphasia, and cross-linguistic research. A prolific and internationally renowned scientist, she was devoted to her students and colleagues, and known for her generosity and enormous joie de vivre.

Please come to help remember and celebrate Liz's life.

NOTE: Traffic in the vicinity is expected to be unusually heavy for the day and time because of a golf tournament at the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Please allow up to an additional half-hour for travel and parking; if at all possible, approach from the south.
