SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT - City of San Diego La Jolla Village Drive Widening Project

Construction by the City of San Diego of a major road construction project on La Jolla Village Drive has recently started. The construction is expected to continue through December 2005. The improvements will result in improved traffic circulation and safety in the area.

The project will increase the number of lanes on La Jolla Village Drive from the Interstate 5 freeway to Expedition Way/Revelle College Drive. The existing street will be widened in some areas and the existing median area will be narrowed in others in order to provide the additional travel lanes. The project includes the widening of the existing La Jolla Village Drive overcrossing of Gilman Drive. Intersections that will be affected by the project include Villa La Jolla Drive, Gilman Drive, La Jolla Scenic Way, Torrey Pines Road, and Expedition Way/Revelle College Drive.

Most construction work will occur on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The contractor will be required to maintain at least two travel lanes in each direction on La Jolla Village Drive at all times. Certain exit and entrance ramps may be closed during construction; closures will be posted in advance and detours will be provided. Access to UCSD and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps will not be affected.

It is anticipated that the construction and traffic detours may result in significant disruptions and delays. The use of alternate routes is highly suggested.

The City of San Diego will be establishing a "project hotline" number for questions or comments about the project. Until that phone line is operational, you may contact Madeleine Lee at the City Council District 1 office (619-236-6611 or mlee@sandiego.gov) or the undersigned (858-534-5782 or mphegley@ucsd.edu).
