SUBJECT:    Establishment of the Center for Networked Systems as an
Organized Research Unit

Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative officials, I am pleasedto announce the establishment of the Center for Networked Systems (CNS) as an Organized Research Unit reporting to Vice Chancellor Richard Attiyeh. Andrew Chien, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, will serve as its first Director.

A primary goal of the Center is to develop key technologies and frameworks for networked systems and to accelerate the rapid advance and widespread adoption of networks and networked systems through multi-disciplinary research efforts that combine the perspective and knowledge from many different domain experts. CNS research efforts will complement initiatives in the departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as the San Diego Super Computer Center, the California Institute for Telecommunications, and the Center for Magnetic Recording Research.

The Center has received generous commitments from AT&T, Alcatel, Hewlett-Packard, QUALCOMM, and Sun Microsystems. Membership in the Center is open to all interested faculty members and research scientists/scholars.
