SUBJECT:

UCSD Vice Chancellor Jim Langley

With much personal regret I need to inform you that Vice Chancellor Jim Langley has given UCSD his official notice that he will leave the University. Jim has been offered an extraordinary opportunity. Although his commitment to UCSD remains steadfast, this is an opportunity that rarely comes along, and he has decided to accept this new position at Georgetown University as Vice President for Alumni and University Relations.

As you know, Jim has served UCSD in many capacities. As Vice Chancellor for External Relations, he has managed our development success, doubling annual gift income; he’s been our outreach ambassador, building support and engagement among alumni and other philanthropic constituencies; and he has implemented a strong strategic communications and federal and community relations vision. As President of the UCSD Foundation, he has spearheaded a growth effort beyond all imaginable goals. And last, but most important, he created, implemented, and has driven our “Imagine What’s Next” campaign to succeed at incomparable levels. We are currently at two-thirds of the $1 billion campaign and remain on schedule, thanks to the work of Vice Chancellor Langley and his staff.

Although I have only worked with him for the last 9 months, I immediately knew the impact he had made on UCSD upon meeting him. His tireless efforts and advocacy on external relations have built the solid foundation which we will use to move forward in implementing our vision for UCSD.

Again, it is with great regret that we must bid Jim farewell, but also give him our heart- felt congratulations. I am pleased to say that Jim will remain at UCSD until the end of June.
