SUBJECT:    Director Search for the Institute for International,
Comparative, and Area Studies (IICAS)

A search is now underway for the position of Director of the Institute for International, Comparative, and Areas Studies (IICAS), an Organized Research Unit at UCSD. The Director will report to the Vice Chancellor for Research.

The Institute for International, Comparative, and Area Studies (IICAS) was created in 2001 to promote research on international, comparative, and cross regional topicsand foreign area studies. Building on the substantial existing strengths of UCSD in international and area studies, IICAS coordinates and supports the research of faculty in departments, area studies programs, and the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS).

Responsibilities of the Director include:

· intellectual leadership and direction for the Institute’s research, educational, and campus-wide service activities,

· oversight of the Office of International Academic Exchange and Protocol and administrative and managerial activities of the Institute

· promoting international studies and scholarship at UCSD

· advising the senior vice-chancellor on campus priorities in international studies.

Qualifications include superior record of teaching and research, familiarity with UCSD international and area studies programs, and some record of activity with IICAS.

Eligibility is restricted to those individuals holding tenured faculty appointments at UCSD. It is anticipated that the initial appointment will be for a five-year term from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2011.
