ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD (including UCSD Medical Center)

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Dr. David N. Bailey to UC Irvine Post

I wish to extend my sincere congratulations to Dr. David Bailey, Interim Vice Chancellor - Health Sciences and interim Dean of the School of Medicine, who was named today as Vice Chancellor - Health Affairs at the University of California, Irvine.

This appointment is a well-deserved recognition of Dr. Bailey’s outstanding leadership skills. UC Irvine is fortunate to have someone of Dr. Bailey’s professional caliber and personal integrity as its first Vice Chancellor - Health Affairs. We are fortunate that his wisdom, experience and extraordinary dedication to the important missions of the University of California will remain in the system, though his departure from UC San Diego will be a loss for our campus.

He has been a valued colleague and advisor to me and many others during his tenure at UC San Diego. In addition to his seemingly tireless administrative leadership of the Health Sciences as Interim Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculty and Student Matters, and for many years as Chair of Pathology, he has also been a devoted teacher, active clinician and respected researcher throughout his career.

Dr. Bailey earned his M.D. from Yale University Medical School and joined the UC San Diego faculty in 1977. He has been the consummate “triple threat” academician and has earned the respect and affection of colleagues and students. His service in the Vice Chancellor’s office will leave a lasting legacy through the many partnerships and programs that he has shepherded from inception through implementation. I have admired his ability to manage the complex details of major institutional initiatives, and juggle multiple projects and issues, while maintaining strong relationships with our students and trainees as a personal priority.

We are currently completing our search for our next Vice Chancellor - Health Sciences and hope to finalize our recruitment by the end of January. Dr. Bailey has agreed to continue in his role with UC San Diego through March, assisting with a smooth transition.

Please join me in expressing our appreciation to Dr. Bailey for all he has done for UC San Diego, and wishing him the best in his new position at UC Irvine.
